Many of you may be thinking about planning your outings for the cherry blossom viewing season that will soon be upon us. In this issue, we would like to introduce some recommended cherry blossom viewing spots carefully selected by local staff of Sotetsu Hotels in various regions, from Sapporo in Hokkaido to Kumamoto in Kyushu! From classic cherry blossom viewing spots to hidden gems near the hotel, these are spots that you should visit at least once. (Information as of February 2024)
Hokkaido and Tohoku Area
Sapporo Maruyama Park and Hokkaido Shrine
・Usual bloom time : Mid to late April
The most popular place for cherry blossom viewing in Sapporo is here! Hokkaido Shrine has about 1,100 cherry trees, and Maruyama Park has 120 cherry trees, making it a popular cherry blossom viewing spot for many years. The blooming and full-blooming period varies depending on the type of cherry trees, location, and exposure to the sun, so you can enjoy the cherry blossoms for a long period of time. A stroll along the street from Nishi 15-chome to Maruyama Park on the streetcar is also recommended.

Yokohama Sankeien Garden

Sankeien is a 175,000 sqm Japanese garden created by industrialist and tea master Hara Sankei. During the cherry blossom viewing season, approximately 250 cherry trees are in bloom. The cherry blossom tunnel leading from the Honmoku area to the main gate, the branches of the cherry trees extending to the pond in the outer garden area, and the harmony of the cherry trees with the historical buildings located in the garden are very impressive. At night, the cherry blossoms are lit up and look different from their daytime appearance.

Nagano Kawanakajima Old Battlefield Heritage Park

Approximately 100 Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom. Hachimanbara is the site of the most fierce battle in the five battles between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin called the Battle of Kawanakajima. With a 12,000 sqm lawn square, a babbling stream lined with natural stones, and an old-fashioned thatched-roof gazebo, you can immerse yourself in nature.

The entire river is maintained as a city park, and 1,000 cherry trees were planted in 1949 at the suggestion of then Mayor Tatsuma Uichiro. The 1,600 beautiful Someiyoshino cherry trees line both banks of the Shukugawa River for a distance of 2.8 km in a north-south direction. Even at night, the nighttime cherry blossoms illuminated by the city lights are intoxicatingly beautiful.
