Recommended Places to Visit in Kyoto in a Traditional Kimono!

Kyoto is a city with many shrines and temples, old buildings, and streets. Some people are willing to visit Kyoto in a kimono or yukata. There are many rental kimono shops where you can have everything from dressing to haircuts done. Here we will introduce you to some of the best places to visit in Kyoto in kimono.  (Information as of October 2018)

Kongoji (Yasaka Koshindo) Temple

Yasaka Koshindo, a small temple in Higashiyama, is very popular now, especially among young women. The reason is the beautiful amulet, called "Kukuri-zaru" - a monkey with its tied hands and feet. The amulets, made of colorful cloth, are hung in a row in the halls of the temple, it is a very popular spot as it has an "Instagram-worthy" appearance. 



Access:  6-minute walk from Higashiyama Yasui Bus stop or a 3-minute walk from Kiyomizumichi Station


Hours of Operation:  9:00 - 17:00

Kimono Forest

"Kimono Forest" is located at Arashiyama Station on the Keifuku Dentetsu Arashiyama Line. Kyoto Yuzen fabrics are wrapped in acrylic and made into poles about 2 meters high, which are installed in various places in the station and beside the railroad tracks.


There are 600 Kimono poles covering the entire station grounds. During the day, you can enjoy the color patterns of Kyo Yuzen fabrics as they are, and at night, the inside of the poles glow with LED lights, creating a fantastic world.



Access: close to Arashiyama Station on the Keifuku Dentetsu Arashiyama Line.

Light-up hours:  Evening - 21:00  (until 23:00 in some areas, subject to change depending on the season)

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

The "Bamboo Forest Path" in Sagano is a path surrounded by a 200-meter-long bamboo forest between Okochi Sanso Garden and Nonomiya Shrine. As far as the eye can see, the bamboo is green, and you will feel as if you have wandered into a different space. In December, the path is lit up and you can walk through the fantastic bamboo scenery.


Access: 3-minute walk from Torokko Arashiyama Station on the Sagano Kanko Line.

About a 12-minute walk from Arashiyama Station on the Keifuku Dentetsu Arashiyama Line.

About a 17-minute walk from Saga Arashiyama Station on the JR Sanin Line.

"Nene no Michi" path

"Nene no Michi" path is located at the foot of Kodaiji Entokuin Temple, where Nene, the wife of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, is said to have spent the rest of her life. It is a stone-paved road that leads to Kodaiji Temple, down south from Maruyama Park. The streets are lined with stores and sweet shops, almost no cars, it is a great place to walk and take photos in kimono.



Access: 15 minutes on foot from Keihan Railway "Gion Shijo"

About 7 minutes on foot from Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau (city bus)  "Higashiyama Yasui"

Ryoanji Temple

Ryoanji Temple is famous for its stone garden, a dry landscape garden. The number and placement of the stones are carefully chosen so that no matter where you look from, one stone is always hidden from you. It is a good place to spend some time in the kimono while thinking about the various theories about the origin of this garden.


On the south side of Ryoanji Temple, there is a large pond called Koyochi, which is also a pond garden. It is a good place to enjoy the seasonal flowers.


Access:  7 minutes walk from "Ritsumeikan daigaku-mae" bus stop or "Ryoanji-mae" bus stop

Suirokaku Water Bridge

The Suirokaku, which runs through the precincts of Nanzenji Temple, is 93.2 meters long. The brick, granite, and arched piers create a unique atmosphere. If you wear a kimono, you can take really special pictures. 



Access:  10-minute walk from "Higashi Tennocho", "Nanzenji, Eikandomichi" bus stops

               10 minutes walk from "Kegami Station" of Subway Tozai Line
