Top Places in Kyoto to Admire Autumn Sceneries.

Kyoto is one of Japan's leading tourist destinations, with many foreign tourists as well as domestic tourists. There are many attractions everyone can enjoy throughout the year, but only during the season of autumn leaves where the trees and mountains are painted in beautiful colors, special scenery is presented to the audience. Here are some of the best places to visit when traveling to Kyoto in autumn.

Kiyomizudera Temple

Kiyomizudera Temple is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Kyoto, it attracts many tourists, especially during the season of autumn leaves. About 1,000 mountain maples are planted in the temple grounds, where you can enjoy the contrast of all the colors during the autumn foliage season.


Kiyomizudera Temple is also famous for its national treasures, important cultural assets, more than 30 monuments, and temple buildings.


The temple's main hall, also known as the "Kiyomizu Stage," is a must-see.


If you can find some extra time, you should enjoy the nighttime illumination, a very special event.

Arashiyama / Togetsu Bridge

Togetsu Bridge, located in Arashiyama, west of Kyoto City, is also famous for its autumn leaves sceneries. Togetsu Bridge is a 155-meter-long bridge with a beautiful wooden parapet over the Katsura River. During the autumn foliage season, the curves of the Togetsu Bridge are reflected in the river, creating a magnificent view. Tenryuji Temple, located in Arashiyama, in a short walk from the Togetsu Bridge, is also recommended during the autumn foliage season.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, Momiji Garden

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the headquarter of about 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjinsha shrines in Japan. During the autumn season, an area called Momiji Garden is open to the public for a limited time.

The contrast between the vermilion-lacquered The Uguisubashi Bridge in the maple garden and the Kamiya River flowing beneath it and the autumn leaves is spectacular. The Momiji Garden is open to the public every year from late October to early December and is lit up from mid-November to early December, creating an even more magical world.

Shoren-in Temple

Shoren-in Temple (also known as Shoren-in Monzeki) is famous for its pond garden, which is said to have been created by Soami, a Japanese painter, and its Kirishima garden, which is said to have been created by Kobori Enshu, the Japanese artist. The quaint garden combined with the beauty of the autumn leaves makes for a stunning scene.


In the spring and fall, the temple is open for special nighttime viewing and light-up events. The entire temple grounds are lit up with 1,000 lighting fixtures of various sizes, creating a fantastic world including a glowing blue bamboo forest.

5 minutes on foot from "Higashiyama Station" on the Tozai Subway Line

Rokuonji Temple (Kinkakuji)

In 1994, the temple was registered as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites "Cultural Properties of Ancient Kyoto". During the autumn foliage season, visitors can enjoy the beautiful contrast of the golden pavilions and the red color of the leaves.
