Let's Enjoy the Colorful Hydrangeas! Famous Hydrangea Spots in Tokyo

During the rainy season, people tend to be too lazy to go out and stay indoors. If that's the case, you can visit some places famous for their hydrangeas, where you can enjoy them even on a rainy day. Here, we'll introduce you to some of Tokyo's best places to see hydrangeas during the rainy months - June and July.  (information as of February 2017)

Toshimaen

The amusement park "Toshimaen" is popular for its accessibility (only 20 minutes by train from Shinjuku). The park's Hydrangea Garden, located on the north side of the park, is home to 10,000 hydrangeas of 150 different species for about a month from late May to late June.

During the Hydrangea Festival, the "Hydrangea Night" is held to enjoy the nighttime illumination, and you can join the "Hydrangea Guided Tour" that goes around the hydrangea garden with the staff and the "Hydrangea Photography Class".

Access: 1-minute walk from Toshimaen Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line Yurakucho Line,
              2 minutes walk from Toshimaen Station Exit A2 on the Toei Oedo Line
Fee: Adult (junior high school student and older)  1,000 yen

Sumida Park

The Hydrangea Road stretches for about 2 kilometers from the Azuma Bridge entrance of Sumida Park to the Yamatanibori Square and it is a great spot to enjoy the 10,000 hydrangeas.
The best part is that you can enjoy the colorful hydrangeas with the Sky Tree in the distance in the background. Don't forget to take your camera with you when you go out.

Access: 5-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line,
             5-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Tobu Isesaki Line,
             7-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Toei Subway Asakusa Line.

Ueno Park (Shinobazu Pond)

Ueno Park is a popular cherry blossom viewing spot you can enjoy in spring, but the area around Shinobazu Pond in the park is also famous for its hydrangeas. Why don't you enjoy taking photos of hydrangeas blooming softly around the pond while strolling leisurely?
It is also recommended to take a boat and watch the scenery dyed with the colors of hydrangeas from the lake.

Access: 2 minutes walk from Ueno Station on the JR Yamanote, JR Keihin Tohoku, JR Takasaki, and JR Joban Lines

Tokyo Summerland Hydrangea Garden

The Hydrangea Garden, a special feature of  Tokyo Summerland in early summer, is held for about a month starting from early June. About 60 species and 15,000 hydrangea plants paint the garden in vivid colors, creating a fantastic atmosphere. In particular, the cluster of anabels blooming on the slope is a magnificent sight.

Access: 10 minutes by bus from Akigawa Station on the JR Itsukaichi Line.

Asukayama Park

Long known as a famous place for cherry blossoms and azaleas, Kita Ward, Tokyo's Asukayama Park. The park is located at the foot of the mountain on the west side of the park and offers a brilliant view of about 1,300 hydrangea plants. You can feel the unique atmosphere of the rainy season as large hydrangeas of various colors and types bloom all over the narrow street.

Access:  A short walk from the central or south exit of Oji Station on the JR Keihin Tohoku Line, or Asukayama stop on the Toden Arakawa Line.

Koiwa Shobu Garden

The Koiwa Shobu Garden is a circular garden that stretches along the banks of the Edo River. During the Shobuen Festival, held every year from late May to mid-June, visitors can enjoy hydrangeas in full bloom along with 50,000 irises of about 100 species.
The irises here are even more popular than the hydrangeas, but anyway, the scenery on the riverbed will heal your heart.

Shiofune Kannonji Temple

The Shiofune-Kannonji Temple is famous for its azaleas, but during the rainy season, hydrangeas come to the fore. Here you can enjoy various types of hydrangeas such as Ailanthus edulis, Gaku hydrangea, Anabel, and Oakleaf hydrangea.
In addition, there is a Hydrangea Garden in the Kasumi Hillside Hiking Course near the Shiofune-Kannonji Temple, where you can enjoy a stroll while viewing the hydrangeas.


Access: 10 minutes by bus from Kawabe Station on the JR Ome Line, or a 10-minute walk from Shiofune-Kannon Iriguchi on the Nishi-Tokyo Bus or Miyako Bus.
